What is Emergency First Aid at Work?
The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is a comprehensive, one-day training programme designed to equip individuals with the essential knowledge, practical skills and confidence to respond effectively to workplace emergencies. Whether dealing with a minor injury or a life-threatening situation, this course prepares participants to act quickly, safely and confidently when someone needs immediate assistance.
The course focuses on the essential principles of emergency first aid, including assessing an incident, performing cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR), using an automated external defibrillator (AED), assisting an unconscious casualty and responding to choking, severe bleeding and shock.
Through a combination of practical demonstrations, hands-on activities and realistic workplace scenarios, participants develop the skills
needed to recognise an emergency, provide appropriate first aid and support a casualty until professional medical assistance arrives.
On successful completion, participants receive an Emergency First Aid at Work qualification, which is valid for three years.

The Emergency First Aid at Work course is ideal for employees, managers, supervisors and designated workplace first aiders who need to provide emergency first aid within their organisation. It is particularly suitable for workplaces where a first aid needs assessment identifies that emergency first aid training provides an appropriate level of first aid provision, including:

What will you learn?
By the end of the course, participants will have developed the knowledge and practical skills to:
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of a workplace first aider.
- Assess an emergency situation and ensure the safety of themselves and others.
- Perform CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
- Assist an unconscious casualty who is breathing normally, including placing them in the recovery position when appropriate.
- Recognise and respond to choking in adults.
- Control external bleeding and provide appropriate first aid for wounds.
- Recognise and provide first aid for a casualty experiencing shock.
- Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries, including cuts, grazes, bruises, minor burns and scalds.
- Record and report workplace first aid incidents appropriately.
